The Scottish Grocers’ Federation has welcomed the Scottish Government’s decision to create a new Health Bill in order to bring in its proposed minimum price on alcohol.

The Government had originally planned to tack the laws on to existing legislation and could have brought it into force by Christmas. Creating a new Health Bill will effectively delay the law by at least a year. Scotland had a “challenging relationship with alcohol”, admitted John Drummond, SGF chief executive, but it was essential that significant policy changes should get proper scrutiny by MSPs.
