Local Area Networks (LANs) facilitate the use of electronic shelf-edge labels, so staff can change prices across the store instantaneously, and shoppers can benefit from up-to-the minute product and promotional information.

'Smart' shelf-edge labelling is showcased at Metro's Future Store in Germany, where staff can update 30,000 wireless electronic price labels by remote, rendering printed labels and manual ticketing obsolete.

The Midcounties Co-operative in the UK is rolling out electronic shelf-edge labelling across its estate. "Electronic shelf-edge labelling will come into its own when teamed with digital media promotions," says Bill Waterson, UK head of retail at technology provider Fujitsu. "Promotions that change throughout the day can be instantly supported by the right pricing at the shelf edge."
