The jury is still out on Delhaize's move towards an EDLP pricing policy in its home market, said analysts following the company's first-quarter results statement. Delhaize's performance in the key US market was encouraging, with a 1.5% increase in gross margin. However, heavy competition from Carrefour at home could make 2002 a difficult year. First-quarter sales at Delhaize Belgium grew 4.3% compared with 10.2% for the same period last year, and the company admitted that investing in lower prices across the board rather than deep price cuts and promotions had reduced customer count.
