The Rural Shops Alliance has urged the government to rethink its plans to stop jailing shoplifters.

At the RSA's steering group meeting last week, retailers from across the UK said that, despite all efforts of various authorities, the problem of shoplifting was getting worse, not better.

The group is to write to the government's Sentencing Advisory Panel about its controversial proposals.

RSA chief executive Sean Carter said: "We will invite them to visit retailers in order to find out at first hand what is happening in the real world and the many  consequences of shop theft on individual shop owners and their businesses."

Meanwhile, security company ADT has developed an information pack offering tips on how to prevent shoplifting. It suggests practical measures to deter criminals from stores.
