Shoppers returned to the high street last month after being kept away by the freezing conditions in January.

Total sales in February were up 4.5% over the same period last year, according to new figures from the British Retail Consortium. Like-for-likes were up 2.2%.

In January when the winter weather was at its most severe, sales slumped by 1.2%.

BRC director general Stephen Robertson warned that the figures were less positive than they appeared as they were up against a particularly poor performance last year in 2009.
