With retail sales of warm water shrimp currently growing at around 60% year on year [TNS], the UK’s leading seafood company, Young’s, has issued a new policy designed to guide best practice in sourcing warm water shrimp from suppliers around the world.
In the past year, Young’s has doubled the volume of tropical warm water shrimps it buys from carefully selected suppliers in countries such as Vietnam and Columbia. The company is keen to emphasise the need for vigilance by western buyers, particularly in light of the social and environmental problems which can be created by unregulated warm water shrimp aquaculture.
