Marks & Spencer’s Simply Food expects to have seven motorway service outlets by Easter.
Andrew Lynch, chief executive of SSP, the Compass Group division that operates 24 Simply Food stores across the travel sector, admitted that the Toddington Moto trial results had been mixed. “It was a bit of a shock. Total retail sales grew, but Moto retail and catering sales fell and the profit impact was negative.”
However, he said: “We’ve spent a year working on it. We’re now into the second year and we’re seeing total sales increasing 12%. There have also been sales increases on the forecourt.”
There are currently four Moto Simply Food outlets. SSP was also scrutinising further airport opportunities, said Lynch.
