Sir; I was astonished to read in last week's The Grocer (Giving Local Directions, p30) that the regional food groups of England concentrate their work on exports. As chief executive of Heart of England Fine Foods, I began to wonder what we at HEFF had been doing for the last four and a half years. To give the impression the regional groups do not work with small producers is extremely misleading and I would like to invite Charles Couzens of the Foundation for Local Food Initiatives to come and see, at first hand, the work we are undertaking. As a producer-led organisation, HEFF has many examples of start-up and micro-businesses that have genuinely been assisted through either our trade development or consumer awareness programmes. Some of these small companies may well be the exporters of tomorrow; if that is the case I would be proud to think that HEFF has helped them on their way. However, our main objective will always be to help small and medium sized businesses, develop trade locally and regionally. Let's hope the government's response to the Curry report is supportive of the regional food group network, to ensure we can continue to work effectively to ensure that the needs of all suppliers are met.
