Smithfield Foods has set its sights on becoming one of the UK's top meat businesses in three years.
Chief executive John Allton Jones told The Grocer that the business was looking for organic growth in its cooked and fresh meats, as well as opportunistic acquisition to boost it from a £60m turnover business into the premier league of meat companies.
"There is a huge opportunity to bring a range of products to the UK," said Allton Jones. "The high-quality end of the market is where we want to be."
Smithfield is in the process of merging its UK operation with Inter Food Services. The move broadens Smithfield's range of meat products, which include premium cooked and sliced meats, pâté, canned meat and fresh pork, chicken and turkey.
It is a key supplier of all the major multiples, with a 60-40 split in favour of branded products, notably its PEK ham brand.
