Reduced tobacco smuggling has been a key factor in driving growth in the UK grocery wholesale market in the past year, according to a new report from IGD. Grocery Wholesaling 2002 estimates the size of the market to be £15.3bn, up 3.3% on the previous year, with cash and carry growing from £9.2bn to £9.3bn and delivered wholesale up 6.6% from £6.2bn to £6.5bn. The report says greater vigilance at customs points because of foot and mouth restrictions and the introduction of the UK Duty Paid Mark on tobacco have helped cut smuggling, pushing extra sales through legitimate traders. {{NEWS }}
