Spanish berry exports to the UK are back on course and expected to last through until the May bank holiday. But total losses suffered by growers in the centre of the production region around Huelva, caused by unusually wintery weather, could reach E80m.
Strawberries and raspberries were particularly badly affected and the latter are only just becoming available. Some growers found their plants had been totally destroyed by frost.
At present, the region’s strawberry producer and exporter association is seeking to change the regulations to allow it to accept regional and national government aid.
