Californian cherry producers have urged retailers to continue to stock Bing cherries after the Spanish season has kicked off to offer consumers greater variety.
California Bing cherries enter the UK in late May or early June. But because Picotas are cheaper to import, retailers tend to replace Bing with the Spanish variety when the cherry season in Spain begins a month later.
Michael Rucier at the California Cherry Advisory Board said consumers could be encouraged to demand Bing cherries over Picotas based on their taste. The board will begin a sampling campaign in retailers, including Waitrose and M&S, from the end of May.
