Independent retailers have almost all completely removed Sudan 1-contaminated stock from shelves but half have still not received official instructions.
In a follow-up to last week’s survey of independent retailers (The Grocer February 26, p5) The Grocer asked Headcount Worldwide Field Marketing to audit independent stores four days after the Food Standards Agency’s imposed deadline for stock removal.
Just eight affected products were still on shelf. Two stores in Beckenham, south east London, were the offenders - one belonging to a symbol group and one unaffiliated.
Despite the quick overall response, 46% of stores visited had still not received official notification. A total of 39% said they expected their cash & carry to advise them, 34% the local authority, 30% the FSA and 9% each for manufacturers and the Department of Health.
