Wal-Mart has announced ambitious store opening plans for 2002 that will increase the company's retail space by 9%. Chief executive Lee Scott said: "The planned square footage growth for the coming year represents approximately 46 million square feet of new retail space, which will be the largest square footage increase in the company's history." The plans include 50 discount stores, 180-185 Supercenters and 50-55 Sam's Clubs in the US, and 120-130 new stores overseas. The figure includes store relocations and expansions. A spokeswoman would not reveal whether any new stores are planned in Germany, but confirmed the remodelling programme to refurbish and extend its 94 stores into US-style Supercentres would continue. {{NEWS }}
