The European Union’s plans to reform the sugar regime could “seriously threaten” the viability of Tate & Lyle UK’s sugar refinery in East London, Mark White, head of T&L’s European sugar arm has warned.

Speaking at a select committee hearing, White said that the proposals “put a question mark” over the future of the plant in Silvertown, East London.

The plant has been in operation since the 1880s and is the only remaining T&L refinery in the UK.
