The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has received assurances from the DTI that there are no plans to change the range of hours or the maximum number of hours large shops are permitted to open for on Sundays.

ACS chief executive David Rae said: “Following the passing of the Licensing Act, there was some speculation in the trade that the government would move to liberalise Sunday Trading legislation. It is pleasing to hear confirmed our view that this is not part of the government’s plans.

“However, all of us with an interest in supporting small stores should remain vigilant.”
