A telephone poll for The Grocer found that 82% would object to supermarkets being free to open as long as they like, as already happens in Scotland.
Two thirds of independent retailers said they would lose business if the supermarkets were allowed to open for longer. Nearly three quarters (74%) said they took advantage of the opportunity to open when the major supermarkets were forced to close by the current six-hour restriction on a Sunday.
However, they were very pessimistic about the prospects of retaining the advantage, with 96% saying they expected the rules would be relaxed some time in the future
