Own label pizza and ready meals manufacturer Perkins Foods is embarking on a radical streamlining plan to slash supply chain costs. Two thirds of its supply base will be axed, UK purchasing will be centralised and contracts put out to tender. In a letter to "all suppliers of Perkins Foods group companies", the company demands a 5% reduction in prices if suppliers wish to enter the next stage of Perkins' supply chain restructuring programme. Recipients are told to backdate the reduction to January 1 2001. A tendency to source goods on a decentralised basis had led to a "proliferation of suppliers" and "considerable inefficiencies," said the letter. {{NEWS }}
