The first UK shipment of certified sustainable palm oil has been purchased by oil and fats manufacturer AAK and is due to arrive in the country by November.
The cultivation of palm oil, which is used in about 10% of supermarket products, can cause damage to rainforest habitats, endangered species and indigenous peoples. As a response, manufacturers, retailers and NGOs formed the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil to create a set of standards for responsible palm growth. The first plantation has now passed these benchmarks.
