Spanish exports of table olives last year were 140,000 tonnes. Supply problems caused by drought-hit crops were further distorted by the fact that while producers can claim an EU subsidy for olives supplied to crushing plants, no such incentive has ever existed for the table variety. It must be stressed, however, that not all production can be transferred from eating olives to oil. Prospects for this year's production are more favourable, provided the trees have not suffered from the drought years.
