About 5,000 plastics industry workers marched in Taiwan’s capital Taipei in protest against new curbs on plastic bags and tableware.

The new legislation, which took effect on January 1, requires supermarkets, chain stores and restaurants to charge customers for plastic bags and disposable utensils in an attempt to cut waste by 30%.

The average Taiwanese uses 900 plastic bags a year but protesters said the curbs could cost the industry 50,000 jobs.
