Tate & Lyle said it plans to develop and manufacture over the next 18 months a new food ingredient, offering thickening and gelling properties at its Illinois unit in the US.

T&L said the process based on its fermentation capability will be commercialised to produce Xanthan Gum and other related bio products from carbohydrate feedstock.

Xanthan is used in a number of industrial applications in coatings, pharmaceuticals, adhesives, cosmetics and oil well fluids.
