Tate & Lyle has reported flat operating profit for the first-quarter.

The sugar manufacturer also revealed sales of its Splenda sweetener were ahead of last year, "with customer de-stocking thus far having less of an effect than anticipated".

It has also completed a consultation with European and local works councils to sell half of its European starch and sweetener business to Syral, a subsidiary of Tereos of France, for E300m (£202m). The deal is expected to be completed in September.
