The European sugar business of Tate & Lyle has been acquired by American Sugar Refining for £211m.

The deal comes two months after Tate & Lyle's new CEO Javed Ahmed announced the company's speciality food ingredients business would become a key focus for the company.

The deal includes two cane sugar refineries, in London and Lisbon, and the Lyle's Golden Syrup factory in London.

Proceeds from the sale would be used to reduce its £814m debt, said Ahmed.

"This disposal will enable us to concentrate our resources on growing our business," he added.
