Belgian retailer Delhaize is taking on Dutch rival Ahold in Thailand with an aggressive store opening plan. Ahold's Tops stores outnumber Delhaize's Food Lion supermarkets two to one, with 41 outlets to Delhaize's 20. But ambitious plans to open 30 new stores trading under the Food Lion fascia over the next two years will give the Belgian firm the edge over its rival, which plans to open just two to four new outlets next year. The news comes shortly after Delhaize's Greek unit Alfa-Beta bought local supermarket chain Tofro, making it the second largest retailer in the country.
