February 2, 1991. More than half the checkout scanning errors in an Irish shopping survey gave the customer an accidental bargain, according to the magazine Consumer Choice. The official publication of the Consumers' Association of Ireland found 16 wrong charges in its survey of 641 purchases. But 10 of those errors came out in the shoppers' favour  including 20 cigarettes for 19p and 59p of mixed nuts for 9p. Supermarkets must improve system accuracy if they want to earn the consumer's confidence, the magazine warns. It adds scanner errors may be repeated many times. {{COUNTERPOINT }}
