There is the difficulty of entering upon business themselves after working as an assistant, as, like all other businesses, the trade is drifting into big concerns and the small man had not very much chance of cultivating a business for himself. Next the grocery trade is about the worst paying trade, so far as assistants are concerned, and this must be altered if it is to attract a better class of young men to the shop.
