Retailers are finding it more difficult to recruit staff while good employees are particularly hard to hire. An exclusive The Grocer survey of 100 multiple retail store bosses revealed one third had experienced problems with recruitment and the same number had found the calibre of available staff lower. Almost a quarter said this was having a detrimental effect on their business. The survey found 11 of them currently had more than 10 vacancies. More than half had up to 10 vacant posts. IGD chief executive Joanne Denney said the industry needed to present a more coherent front and a more attractive image. "There seems to be very little understanding of who we are as an industry and what we do. We have to make sure we don't lose out to other sectors." Association of Graduate Recruiters chief executive Carl Gilleard said the sector hadn't got across what retail management meant. "Retailers can't blame the media or careers advisors. It's up up to them." - See page 26. {{NEWS }}
