Wholesalers may have to face the harsh reality that there are simply too many symbol groups to compete against the onslaught from the multiples.
That was the no-nonsense message delivered by top retail academic Dr Jim Quinn at this year’s conference.
Dr Quinn, from Trinity College Dublin and an expert in grocery wholesaling in Britain and Ireland, said: “There is still too much fragmentation and a danger that there are too many symbol groups.
“The industry needs to consider this as an industry-level problem.”
He said there were currently more than a dozen major symbol groups, something which he claimed would prove “unhelpful” in generating future success for retailers as they fought to maintain a trusted identity in consumers’ minds.
