East of England Co-operative Society has posted a 22.2% jump in half-year profits to £7.2m.

Turnover rose 3.4% to £205m in the 28 weeks to 8 August, with like-for-like sales in its food stores up by more than 5%.

"The financial strength of the society, which continues to operate with no net borrowings, has enabled us to continue to develop our food business," said CEO Richard Samson.

However, the society warned that costs associated with the sell-off of its department store business earlier this year would have a negative impact on full-year profits.
