The UK biscuit and cake industry has done all it can to reduce salt levels, a conference in Brussels has heard.
Speaking at the Caobisco Invites event this week, Barbara Gallani, sector manager of the Food and Drink Federation's Biscuit, Cake, Chocolate and Confectionery arm, said UK manufacturers had reduced salt in every cake and biscuit category and had achieved overall reductions of between 16% and 50% since February 2006 in some of the most popular brands of cakes and biscuits.
This was in addition to the 20% to 40% reductions previously achieved, she said.
"Many UK biscuits and cakes are now at their limit regarding salt reduction, both technically and in terms of taste and texture," Gallani claimed.
"The UK has important lessons to share with its European colleagues," she added.
