On the Moray coast, Glen and Gilli Allingham have introduced a wild garlic type with extra large cloves known as porcelain.
Grown originally for local consumption through farmers
markets, it is being distributed by TMBC on an exclusive basis to Waitrose. It will be sold under the Allingham’s Really Garlicky Garlic brand, rsp £1.69.
Earlier this month, Sainsbury earned widespread publicity for its Elephant Garlic. Grown in Argentina and the US, the tennis ball-sized garlic has a mild flavour.
