The supermarket sector should have its own regulator the GMB Union has said.

The union said that the regulator could investigate the affect that the multiples have on local communities and how they treat their staff.

GMB acting secretary Paul Kenny said that he had met with officials at the Department of Trade and Industry to propose his idea.

He added: “Supermarkets are absolute predators. They want to eliminate all opposition, and the impact of this is damaging communities and town centres.”
