Sir; Your excellent interview with Monsanto agricultural chief Hugh Grant made interesting reading, but left me wondering whether the US GM giant really had learned its lessons from the UK experience. Grant is right to say that his group was arrogant when it first started to preach the GM gospel on this side of the Atlantic. But surely he is still being arrogant when he suggests that the food safety issue around GM is "off the agenda". I suggest Mr Grant flies the Atlantic at his earliest opportunity and listens to the great British public. He would very soon realise that food safety is still uppermost in their minds, especially where that great unknown, genetic modification is concerned. True there are signs of a balanced scientific debate, but I would suggest that there's a long way to go before GM foods are freely available on UK grocery shelves.
