In America a 9% increase was recorded by Costco, the US warehouse operator, for its December sales for stores open at least a year.
The company said total sales in the five weeks ended January 2 rose 11% to $5.77bn, while its US same store sales rose 8% and international sales rose 12%.
Strong sales over the Christmas period were also reported by US grocery chain Wal-Mart. The company said same-store sales topped Wall Street’s expectations last month as total sales increased strongly for the period.
But the outlook wasn’t so good for all grocery retailers in the US over this period. Regional supermarket chain Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co, which operated the A&P grocery chain, reported a wider-than expected quarterly loss.
The company said its loss for the quarter almost tripled due to modest sales growth, and it expects the competitive environment to continue to put pressure on its sales over the next few months.
