Organic expansion Expansion of organic pears in north west US has encouraged exporters to approach the USDA to request help towards a promotional project in the UK this season. The main production region, accounting for 80% of the conventionally grown national acreage, is expecting a bumper 16 million carton crop, 1.5 million more than last season. Exports of 6,700 tonnes to the EU last year were valued at nearly $4m. The organic crop has grown from 4% to 6% based similarly on green Anjous with some red varieties and Bosc. Exporters in Oregon and Washington believe EU buyers will be attracted because of the effect of the weaker US economy, according to Jeff Correa, international marketing director of USA Pears. {{M/E FRESH PRODUCE }}
