More than 1,000 individual shopworkers responded to the government’s research, with 99.9% supporting the proposed legislation against Christmas Day opening.
Usdaw’s boss, Sir Bill Connor said: “This is a fantastic response. It is the best feedback we have ever had from our membership on a Government consultation.
“Christmas Day working looms large over all British shopworkers. If someone had said to me 10 years ago that shops would be opening on December 25, I would have thought they had gone mad. But without legislation it is a real possibility in today’s retail sector.”
The new legislation will guarantee that shopworkers will be able to spend Christmas Day with their families.
