Most independent retailers do not employ staff on the national minimum wage, according to a telephone poll for The Grocer.
Although nearly a third (37%) of retailers said they employed staff on the minimum wage, nearly two-thirds, 63%, have no staff on the minimum.
From October 1, the wage will be extended to 16 and 17-year-olds at £3 an hour. The minimum for 18 to 21-year olds rises from £3.80 to £4.10 and from £4.50 to £4.85 for adults. Only 2% said the October changes would mean staff would be on the minimum.
The decision to extend the minimum wage to 16 and 17-year-olds would have little impact with just 3% saying it would affect their staff.
But 39% of retailers expected their costs to go up in October and 22% of them said they would cut staff hours.
