Salaries in the food industry held their own in 2002 despite the economic downturn, according to a pan-industry salary survey for The Grocer by Croner Reward.
Senior employees took home more than their peers in other industries ­ a director earning a £66,500 basic compared to £60,540 in business services.
Bonuses and pay rises were higher than the national average. However, those in mid-tier positions earned lower salaries than their peers in other industries as pressure to cut overheads by slashing the wage bill came to bear.
