Sir; All manner of draconian legislation has been threatened in an attempt to stop youngsters drinking too much cheap alcohol. I am sure the government will use next week's Budget to put even more tax on alcohol and receive millions more in revenue without addressing the real problem of why young people feel so alienated from society that drunken oblivion is their only escape. Current discussion seems to have focused on the availability of cheap lager, discounting, strength, supermarkets and the brewers . Unfortunately, everyone seems to be focusing on the 'how' and not addressing the 'why'. We should really be asking ourselves what is so wrong with the lives of our young people that drinking seems so appealing.
