The UK dairy industry has welcomed a new report that has found that Western Europe ranks third out of 10 for levels of greenhouse gas emissions caused by dairy production.

The report, by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, found that the global dairy industry was responsible for 4% of man-made greenhouse gas emissions.Excluding meat production, the global milk sector was found to create 2.7% of emissions.

Western Europe ranked third after South Asia and Central and South America.

The report mapped emissions through milk production, processing and transportation, and also included meat production from animals originating in the dairy system.

"British dairy farmers and the dairy industry are already working hard to reduce emissions and this report gives us even more motivation," said a spokeswoman for DairyCo.
