The secretary of state for trade and industry has presented a petition to wind up Standards for Promotions Inspectorate Ltd (SPI) in the public interest. The DTI said the organisation was "promoting itself as a regulator of companies and businesses operating in the area of promotions and competitions" and was attempting to raise funds by obtaining subscriptions.

The DTI has extended the Small Firms Loan Guarantee to include retailers. It has also produced a No-Nonsense Guide for small businesses with advice on how to set up a business and access government grants.

The Farmers' Union of Wales has welcomed Morrisons' assurance it sources most of its meat in Britain. Morrisons said 95% of beef in stores is sourced in Britain, and 100% lamb when in season. All pork, chicken and eggs are also sourced in the UK.

The Certificate in Retail Skills has been launched after trials at Asda, Safeway and Selfridges. It has been developed by the London Chambers of Commerce, the Industry Examinations Board and Skillsmart. It provides a training benchmark for all retailers.
