Retailers in the Irish Republic must implement a ban on smoking in the workplace from Monday. Under the legislation, smoking rooms and ‘special areas’ must close and any sneaking into the stock room or toilet for a quick puff could earn the offender, and the store, fines of up to E3,000.
Retailers have a period of grace to phase in the changes. Health and safety inspectors will police the ban and each store is required to prepare a smoke-free policy plan. At the SuperValu chain, outdoor shelters have been constructed for staff on smoking breaks, while Superquinn and Marks are taking measures to encourage staff to quit.
