The World Cup boosted retail sales in June as shoppers stocked up on food and drink.

The CBI reported that 43% of retailers said sales were up in June, compared with 34% who said that sales were down. The balance of nine was unchanged from May.

John Longworth, chairman of the CBI's survey, said: “Consumers' purchases linked to the World Cup have lifted sales for some sectors. But not all have benefited and the recent pick-up may prove to be short-lived once the England team returns home.”
