Carrefour deal referred to authorities

Brussels, Belgium: The European Commission has referred Carrefour's acquisition of the Polish operations of Dutch retailer Ahold to Poland's competition authorities. Carrefour acquired the business, which includes 179 supermarkets, 15 hypermarkets and four petrol stations, for €375m (£254m) in December last year. The French group already operates 71 supermarkets and 32 hypermarkets in the country. The Commission said the deal had been referred locally because it would affect competition in Poland only.
