China in plastic bag crackdown

BEIJING: China is implementing a ban on free plastic bags tomorrow, and has banned the production of ultra-thin plastic bags in an attempt to reduce pollution. Experts predicted the use of plastic bags would fall by up to 40% as shops were forced to charge. "Plastic shopping bags, due to excessive use and inefficient recycling, have caused serious waste of energy and resources and environment pollution," said the government. "The super-thin bags have become a main source of pollution as they are easy to break and are thus disposed of carelessly." Shops that violate the new rules could be fined or have their goods confiscated.
