Germans unhappy about merger
FRANKFURT: The German Federal Cartel Office has warned it will block the planned merger of Edeka's discount chain Netto with Tengelmann's Plus stores in Germany. Edeka and Tengelmann announced plans in November 2007 to merge the two chains and create a retailer with about 4,100 stores. However, in a statement the German Federal Cartel Office said Edeka, which would have a 70% stake in the merged company, "would have a dominant market position". It has asked both retailers to make a statement in favour of the merger before a final decision is made later this month.
