Netto pushes into Ukraine

COPENHAGEN: Netto is to open as many as 1,000 stores in the Ukraine. Netto will be the first discount retailer from western Europe to have operations there. "We see many opportunities in the Ukraine," said Richard Lancaster, Netto's UK MD. "The country has a population of almost 50 million, all of whom have increasingly substantial purchasing power." Netto hopes to have up to 30 stores ready to open by the time the business becomes fully operational in 2009. These will be followed by an additional 25 per year. During 2008 the retailer will also open at least 25 new stores in the UK, Germany, Sweden and 50 in Poland.
