The Elijah Allen store in Hawes, Wensleydale, has been named best shop in the Yorkshire Local Shop Awards 2004, which is run by the Yorkshire Independent Grocers’ Association.
The store is run by husband and wife Richard and Lesley Allen and was described by YIGA secretary Peter Brant as a “traditional family grocer, a destination shop”.

Learoyd, has scooped best local supermarket. The shop has been a star performer in The Grocer 33 (The Grocer, November 22, p17) and was praised for its availability and deli counter. Other winners include The Pantry in Lockton which won best village shop. G Jack & Son in Beverley was best retailer of Yorkshire food and drink. Best independent forecourt went to Reeth Garage, Swaledale. Soft drinks supplier AG Barr was best multiple supplier.
