Young & Co has called time on its brewing operation to focus exclusively on running its pub estate.

The pub group has ended 180 years as a brewer by selling its 40% stake in Wells & Young, the joint venture it set up with Charles Wells. The venture’s brands include Directors and Bombardier.

“Our strategy is really building premium pubs in central London and [Wells’] strategy is developing brands,” said chief executive Stephen Goodyear.

He added: “Young's beer has always been synonymous with the pubs. It is our USP. We still have, by and large, the same supply agreement as when we entered into the joint venture.”
